Researcher from 1990 to 2001 and associate professor at the dept. TeSAF (LEAF) of the University of Padova since 2002. He holds three courses within the Faculty of Agriculture: Forest Ecology, Carbon balance in forest ecosystems and Management of forest disturbances. He is in charge of the PhD course in Ecology. He is charge of the Laboratory of Mountain ecology in S. Vito di Cadore (BL), field research station of the dept. TeSAF.
He has been supervisor of more than 80 thesis (including bachelor, master and final thesis of Erasmus students).
His research activity is in the field of tree ecophysiology with particular emphasis on treeline ecotones. His current studies at treeline aim to assess the mechanisms of water stress resistance both in winter and summer, the relationships between climate factors, xylem cell production and phenology dynamics. He has recently developed a new approach to provide a functional explanation of the treeline formation with particular interest on structure of the vascular system and its implications (more details)
He has been visiting researcher in United Kingdom, Austria and France at different academic and research institutions. He supervised the organising committees of international workshops on forest and treeline ecology, instrumental ecophysiology and environmental monitoring.
He recently won a grant funded by ERASUMS MUNDUS-SUTROFOR in Costa Rica
He has attained international workshops also as invited speaker.
He was involved in research projects funded by MURST and UE since 1990. He has been the scientific coordinator of research projects of both national (CNR: 1994; MURST PRIN: 1998-2000-2002-2005) and international level (Interreg II: year 2000, Interreg IIIB Carbon-pro 2006/07, Interreg IIIB Carpathian Project 2005-2008). Actually he is also in charge of a project on Forest carbon stock of the Veneto Region funded by the Regional Administration.
He is member of the Italian Society of Silviculture and Forest Ecology (SISEF). He acted as referee for international journals (Functional Ecology, Journal of Tropical Forest Science, Dendrochronologia, Forest Ecology and Management, Tree Physiology, Ecology Letters, New Phytologist, Trees).
He participated in several extra European scientific expeditions in Tibet (1990) in Nepal (1999) and in Karakoram (2007- 2008- 2009) funded by EV-K2-CNR aimed to study the structure and composition of high altitude forests
